Into the Alps
After spending time beside the stunning waters of Lake Como, it was time to point the bikes towards the mountains. Day 13 would take us from the Italian lakes into the heart of the Alps, finishing in the beautiful mountain village of Malbun.
The day started refreshingly cool thanks to the overnight thunderstorms and heavy rain that had swept through the area. The storm had washed the air clean, making for ideal riding conditions as we packed up and rolled away from the lake.
Leaving Lake Como behind, the route began with a stretch of motorway before the real adventure unfolded. The roads became more exciting with every kilometre, climbing higher into the mountains through sweeping bends, long tunnels and spectacular alpine scenery.
As the morning clouds disappeared, brilliant blue skies revealed breathtaking mountain views in every direction. The temperature climbed steadily from 23°C to 29°C, making for a hot afternoon, but with far less humidity than the previous day it remained comfortable in the saddle.
One of the highlights of the day was the constantly changing scenery. Every valley led to another mountain pass, every tunnel opened onto another incredible panorama, and the roads twisted endlessly through the Alps. It was one of those riding days where you simply don't want the road to end.
After covering 205 kilometres over 5 hours and 50 minutes, we rolled into Malbun, surrounded by towering peaks and fresh mountain air. As evening approached, the calm alpine setting was transformed by an incredible thunderstorm. Lightning lit up the surrounding mountains while thunder echoed through the valleys, providing a spectacular finale to an unforgettable day in the Alps.
