Day seventeen
Full Circle Back to Aachen
Today's ride marked the beginning of the final stretch of the journey. Leaving Frankfurt behind, I pointed the bike west towards Aachen, with a route that took me through Bad Camberg, Limburg an der Lahn, Oberhaid, Derbach, and Köln before finally arriving back where this adventure had begun.
At 241 kilometres, today's ride wasn't the longest of the trip, but it was one of the most enjoyable. The weather couldn't have been much better, with clear skies all day and temperatures sitting between 23°C and 26°C. It was warm enough to enjoy the ride without the intense heat that had accompanied me on some of the previous days.
The roads out of Frankfurt were straightforward, and before long I was settling into the rhythm of the motorway. As the miles rolled by, the familiar feeling of simply riding took over one of those days where the journey itself is the highlight.
Passing through Bad Camberg and Limburg an der Lahn offered glimpses of classic German towns, while the countryside in between reminded me just how varied Germany's landscapes can be. The route towards Köln brought steadily increasing traffic, but nothing that spoiled the day's progress.
As Aachen drew closer, there was a strange mix of excitement and reflection. After thousands of kilometres across Europe, I was returning to the city where this incredible adventure had started. The outskirts soon appeared, followed by the familiar streets leading into the centre.
One memorable moment came when I crossed a bridge through some roadworks before riding beneath a railway bridge just as a train passed overhead. Shortly afterwards, I noticed someone admiring the bike, always a nice reminder that Biker's have a way of bringing people together wherever you travel.
Another landmark that stood out was the impressive Hilton Hotel dominating part of the skyline as I made my way into the city centre. It was one of those signs that the journey was coming full circle.
After finding parking and switching off the engine for the evening, there was a real sense of accomplishment. Aachen wasn't just another overnight stop it represented the completion of another chapter in this European tour.
The afternoon was spent taking in the city on foot, capturing a few photos and reflecting on everything the trip had delivered over the past couple of weeks. Standing in Aachen once again, it was hard not to think back to the excitement of setting off all those days ago.
