There's something special about meeting up with friends when you're hundreds of miles from home. After the long motorcycle journey to Barcelona, seeing John and Lorraine again felt like hitting the reset button. They'd flown over to spend the day with me, and although we'd all been looking forward to it, I don't think any of us realised just how much I needed it.
Solo travel is an incredible experience. Every day brings new roads, new scenery, and new challenges. It gives you the freedom to go wherever you want, whenever you want. But it also comes with long hours inside your own helmet, plenty of time to think, and moments where you miss the people who know you best.
From the moment we met up, everything changed. The focus wasn't on the bike, the next destination, or how many miles were left to ride. It was simply about enjoying each other's company. We wandered through the streets of Barcelona with no real plan, stopping whenever something caught our eye, finding places to eat and drink, swapping stories, and laughing at the sort of things only lifelong friends find funny.
Those laughs were exactly what I needed. They reminded me that adventures aren't only measured by mountain passes, coastal roads, or countries crossed. Sometimes they're measured by the people who join you along the way.
For one day, the journey slowed down. I wasn't thinking about tomorrow's route or checking maps every few minutes. I was just present, making memories with two people who've been there through so much of my life. It was a welcome break from the routine of riding and a chance to recharge mentally before heading back out on the road.
The next morning came round and it was time to say goodbye again, I climbed back on the bike feeling lighter than I had when I'd arrived. My body had rested, but more importantly, my mind had too.
People often say travel changes you, and they're right. But it's moments like this that remind you what really matters. The places are unforgettable, the roads are incredible, but it's the people you share parts of the journey with who leave the biggest mark.
Sometimes, a single day with your best friends is exactly what the doctor ordered.
