Day Eleven
After ten incredible days on the road, Day 11 was all about reaching one of the highlights of the entire adventure Nice, on France's spectacular Côte d'Azur.
The day's route would take me from Agde, through Montpellier, Nîmes, Aix-en-Provence, and Mandelieu-la-Napoule, before finally arriving in Nice. It was a long day in the saddle, covering 477.1 kilometres over 8 hours and 2 minutes, but every kilometre brought me closer to the Mediterranean.
The morning wasn't too bad. Thick cloud covered the sky, and although it was already humid, the cooler conditions made the first few hours of riding comfortable. That comfort didn't last. As the day wore on, the clouds disappeared, the sun took over, and the temperature climbed relentlessly. Before long it was over 40°C, making every stop feel like stepping into an oven. Even with the airflow from the bike, the heat was relentless, and every fuel or water stop became a chance to cool down for a few precious minutes.
Most of the day was spent cruising along the French motorways. Long stretches of smooth tarmac made for enjoyable riding, although there were moments when some drivers seemed to think they were competing in their own version of Wacky Races. Keeping alert became just as important as enjoying the scenery.
The route passed another toll gate before continuing south. Gradually, the landscape began to change. The closer I got to the Mediterranean, the more dramatic the surroundings became. Hills rolled into view, the roads became busier, and there was an unmistakable feeling that I was approaching somewhere special.
Then came the moment I'd been waiting for.
The signs for Nice appeared.
There's always something satisfying about seeing the name of your destination after a long day's ride, especially when it's somewhere you've been looking forward to visiting. Riding into the city, the roads grew livelier with traffic, scooters, and pedestrians, while elegant buildings and palm lined streets hinted that I had finally reached the French Riviera.
I captured as much of the arrival as I could on the cameras mounted to the bike, recording the approach into the city, the busy streets, and finally the ride to the hotel. After hours on the motorway, rolling into Nice felt like a genuine achievement.
With the bike safely parked and the hotel checked into, there was little time to rest. The adventure wasn't over for the day. The evening's destination would be another legendary location Monaco. As the sun began to lower, it was time to head back out and experience the glamour, famous streets, and incredible views of one of the world's most iconic places.
Some days are memorable because of what you see. Others are memorable because of what it takes to get there. Day 11 was definitely the latter a demanding ride through intense heat, countless motorway miles, and some entertaining traffic, rewarded by arriving in one of Europe's most beautiful coastal cities.
